GeoGuessr for classrooms: free options for teachers in 2026
Updated October 22, 2026 · 2 min read
GeoGuessr is a natural fit for geography lessons, but most of it now needs a paid account per player. This page sets out what GeoGuessr offers schools as of October 2026 and the free alternatives that work in a classroom, with the two things teachers ask about most: whether students need accounts, and whether there are ads.
What GeoGuessr offers schools today
GeoGuessr used to advertise an education plan. Today its old education page redirects to the home page, and we could not find a public school plan or price on its site, so if you need one, contact GeoGuessr directly. For free, each student can play the five-location Daily Challenge with their own free account, which suits a quick warm-up but not a lesson built around one shared game.
Free picks that work in a lesson
Check your school's policy on ads and student accounts before you choose: most free geography sites are paid for by advertising. Seterra runs on geoguessr.com, so a filter that blocks GeoGuessr may block it too.
The most classroom-ready: every quiz and printable map on the website is free, and GeoGuessr's support pages say the printables may be used in class. Quizzes start without logging in. Challenges, where everyone plays the same quiz and you see the scores, need a GeoGuessr Pro membership and work on the website rather than the app. The full iPhone app has no ads.
Multiplayer lobbies need no accounts, so a whole class can join one game from a link and see each round's results together. It is paid for by ads.
Singleplayer needs no account, which makes it easy for students to practise on their own. Ranked play needs an account, and it shows ads.
No accounts at all, and you can set up a private server and invite the class. The videos of real streets give good discussion points about clues such as signs and traffic.
- Where on Google Earth is Carmen Sandiego?
Three detective cases released in 2019, played inside Google Earth: interview witnesses, decode clues about the next destination and fly there. Story-led and free of ads, with no new cases since 2019, so it works best as a one-off lesson.
- Lizard Point
Simple click-the-map quizzes on countries, capitals and US states, plus free printable outline maps and a study mode. No accounts are needed; its teacher and student accounts were discontinued in March 2023.
Ideas for using them
- Start a unit with one shared OpenGuessr lobby and ask students to explain the clue that gave each location away.
- Use Seterra quizzes for the region you are studying before and after the unit, and compare times.
- Print Seterra or Lizard Point outline maps for the regions students keep missing in the Street View rounds.
- Turn City Guesser videos into a clue hunt: list everything in the frame that narrows down the country.
Questions people ask
Is there a GeoGuessr education plan?
GeoGuessr's former education page now redirects to its home page, and no school plan or price is listed publicly as of October 22, 2026. Contact GeoGuessr for anything beyond the free Daily Challenge.
Which free geography game needs no student accounts?
OpenGuessr lobbies, City Guesser, WorldGuessr's singleplayer, Seterra's quizzes and Lizard Point all work without a student account. Carmen Sandiego in Google Earth needs none either.
